An imaging riometer was installed at Ny-Alesund (invariant latitude, 75.6°) for observations of spatial structure and motion of auroral absorption regions. The antenna consists of a two-dimensional dipole array with 64 elements, and a phasing matrix produces 64 pencil beams viewing an ionospheric area of about 200km square at 90km altitude. The instrument provides us with a two-dimensional image of enhanced absorption at 30MHz with spatial resolution of 20km and time resolution of 1s by using an 8-channel radio receiver. With the aid of a personal computer we can monitor the absorption images in real time by using a quiet day curve produced from daily variations of cosmic radio noise intensity during initial ten days. Three examples of the absorption images are presented for the events occurred in day, evening and night time.
