Entrance flows to a circular pipe which has an axisymmetric sudden expansion were numerically simulated for a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Particularly shear layer instabilities observed behind the sudden expansion were studied. Experimental observation of the flow fields at the corresponding flow conditions were also carried out. Taylor-Helmholtz type instability was observed along the shear layer behind the sudden expansion, and its breakdown into turbulent blobs were observed. Numerical results successfully simulated this vortex breakdown process. The process that flows grow into chaos were also successfully simulated.
