The results of our experimental study on a new type ion source, which is very simple in construction and can be operated in any kind of gas at a pressure from 10^<-6> to 10^<-2> torr, are described. The source can produce monoenergetic ions with a controllable energy from a few tens to several hundreds eV and with density up to several times 10^7 cm^<-3>. As ion beams produced thereby are neutralized by thermal electrons from cathodes, the rapid divergence of the beams during runs hardly occurs.
