The purpose of this report is to discuss several problems related to the medical treatment of leprous out-patients on the basis of case reports. There was one case in which a patient suffering from lepromatous leprae refused to be hospitalized although the cultures were reported positive for mycobacterium leprae. The patient was successfully treated for leprosy with minocycline combined with conventional drugs. About 3 months after the short-term treatment, the patient was clinically improved and the microorganisms disappeared. With due regard to the difficulty of rehabilitation of leprous patients, home treatment is desirable. Such short-term intensive treatment as that described in this report is deserving of further study in the future so that leprous patients may receive medical treatment at home. Among 28 leprous patients under home treatment, there were often problems which they encountered when they were going to receive medical treatment of diseases other than leprosy. Public medical care institutions should open the door to leprous patients so that the patients can receive any kind of medical treatment without prejudice.
