Cardiac arrhythmia in cat with bilateral vagotomy and sympathectomy at the neck was observed in the response to the bilateral clamping of the common carotid artery. The magnitude of pressor response evoked by the electric stimulation to the left cervical sympathetic nerve trunk was about 30 mmHg on the systemic blood pressure in some bilaterally non-vagotomized and sympathectomized preparations, and seemed to be closely connected with the systemic blood pressure level. The bilateral clamping of the common carotid artery caused the pressor response about 40 mmHg which superposed the different pressor response evoked by the electric stimulation in non-vagotomized animal, and evoked more larger pressor response and cardiac arrhythmia in all preparations vagotomized and sympathectomized bilaterally in experiments. In characteristic preparations, the arrhythmia with fairly periodic intervals changed into irregular cardiac cycle intervals after a period depending on the duration of clamping, and disappeared soon by removing the clamping forceps for blood supply to the brain. The mechanism of the pressor response and arrhythmia evoked by bilateral common carotid artery clamping was discussed in relation to the cardiovascular regulating system with baro- and chemoreceptor reflex and the ischemic responses which were thought to be caused due to the increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure for brain, known as Cushing reflex, or mechanical compression to the exposed spinal cord in the central nervous system.
