Dissociation Mechanism and Dynamics of Core-Excited Organic Molecules and Clusters : Deuterium Labeled Methyl-Formate

Photochemical reactions induced by core level excitation in homogeneous molecular clusters are reported. Clusters of deuterium labeled methyl-formate-d (MFD), (DC(O)OCH3), were excited with monochromatized synchrotron radiation in the oxygen K-edge (530–545 eV). Time-of-flight (TOF) fragment-mass spectra of MFD clusters showed the production for series of heterogeneous (MFD)mD+ and (MFD)nCH3OD2+ clusters as well as CH3OD2+ fragment via D/D+ transfer processes within the clusters. Dissociative double ionization within the clusters was measured here by photoelectron–photoion–photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO) technique. Product cation pairs of the heterogeneous clusters were found to be produced exclusively from doubly charged MFD clusters. The dissociation mechanisms and dynamics of the doubly charged MFD clusters are discussed in terms of kinetic energy release (KER) and charge separation distance (CSD).
