Second-Harmonic Nonlinear Mirror CW Mode Locking in Yb:YAG Microchip Lasers

We have demonstrated a passively mode-locked Yb-doped Y3Al5O12 (Yb:YAG) microchip laser by using a second-harmonic nonlinear mirror technique with a noncritical phase-matched LiB3O5 (LBO) crystal. Under cw Ti:sapphire laser pumping, the device exhibits cw mode locking with an average output power of 900 mW and an optical conversion efficiency of 54%; the duration of an individual mode-locked pulse was determined to be 9 ps. The possibility of high-power sub-picosecond laser pulse generation in a Yb:YAG microchip under diode laser pumping is discussed.
