The electrooptical effect of a composite (polymer/induced smectic phase formed by mixing low molecular weight nematic liquid crystals) has been studied. The low molecular weight nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano-4′-pentyloxy biphenyl 5OCB with a strong polar terminal group was miscible with the nematic liquid crystal 4-hexyloxyphenyl-4′-pentyl benzoate HPPB having a weak polar terminal group. This binary mixture formed an induced smectic phase over a wide range of concentration and temperature. The reversible transparent-opaque (light scattering) switching of the polymer/induced smectic phase composite was observed upon the application of electric fields with low and high frequencies, respectively. Both the transparent and opaque states of the mixture could be maintained stably, even after the electric field was turned off (memory effect). The response speed for bistable light switching could be remarkedly improved by reducing the 5OCB fraction, while maintaining an induced smectic state. Thermal writing and local erasure in polymer/induced smectic composite with a response time of ms at room temperature are realized with bistable and reversible light switching.
