The keynotes on Biomedical Engineering (BME) are presented for the people of the engineering side in Japan, not only who are already working in BME, but also who are going to start any research or development in it. The author had been working in the research and development division of a computer and communication company during 35 years and had developed systems or devices, such as an automatic package diagnostic system, a liquid crystal projection device, Shinkansen passengers information system, a medical ultrasonic imaging and detection equipment, a telecare system for the elderly and so on. Now in Tokai University, the detection and rehabilitation engineering for early dementia is added as a new subject. This presentation is based on the long and various experiences. The backgrounds of the keynotes are problems in Japan, one of which is that the creative energy in engineering is decreasing year by year, and the other of which is that the transition of population distribution is moving toward an aging society almost the same as the other advanced countries in the world. The reasons why BME is one of the key engineering and why BME for the elderly is so important are presented. The keynotes about the postures on looking for the needs, choosing the theme, collaborating with persons of the medical side, etc. are presented.
