The goal of this study is to verify the effectiveness of comparing hymn tune names to clarify the relationship between Polynesian hymns. The case selected for verification is an early Samoan hymnal. For comparison, four regions--Samoa, Tahiti, Cook Islands, and New Zealand--are selected. Samoan tune names are examined with a focus on how much they match with the tune names in the other three regions. The test results were as follows. Samoa and Cook Islands are most closely related. 53 percent of tune names were common to both areas. Samoa and Tahiti is also closely related. 40 percent of tune names were shared. Samoa and New Zealand are remotely related. Only 9 percent of tune names were common to both areas. The history of Christianity in Samoa supports this result. From the above results it is concluded that comparing the tune names of the hymns between the different regions in the Polynesia is an effective method for clarifying the relationship between Polynesian hymns.
