This paper investigates how young men and women use mobile phones. The ways in which mobile phone communications influence interpersonal relationships is discussed as well as the differences in the communications depending on the extent of familiarity, for example, acquaintance, friend, or partner, and by gender. The research, which was conducted in 2001 on university and college students and of which 364 valid responses were received, shows three major results as follows:(1)For the factor structure of mobile phone communications it was found that: (a)Mobile phones do strengthen interpersonal relationships, and (b)Mobile phones are often thought of as causing discomfort.(2)Under the factor"strengthen of interpersonal relationships"women scored higher than men. It can, therefore, be concluded that the tendency for women to use mobile phones for this factor is stronger for women than men.(3)Differences were observed depending on familiarity, for example, acquaintance, friend or partner and these are fully discussed in the paper.
