Learning Problems Caused by Non-Canonical Linking

This experimental study indicated that learners did not reject sentences with Theme as Subject in a uniform way. They had more difficulty with middle verbs than measure verbs and psych verbs, which showed that the non-canonical linking of Theme to the subject in middle verbs affected learners most. Furthermore, it was revealed that the passive form was more accepted than the active form in middle verbs. This result suggests that passive morphology is used as a strategy by learners to link Theme to the subject in the case of verb type which involves NP movement.
