John Bale's King Johan leads the anonymous author of The Troublesome Reign of King John(TR)and Shakespeare of The Life and Death of King John(KJ)to re-estimate the reign of King John, a pro-protestant martyr king, reflecting their own time full of religio-political conflicts with the European Catholic forces. In this article, the theme of rebellion in these two plays, which reminds us of the political conflict about Magna Carta between King John and his subjects, highlights one of the main concerns of the late Elizabethan people: loyalty to their sovereign. TR, possibly written in the late 1580s, points out the Catholic invasion and teaches its audience of the great importance of national unity. KJ, written on the basic structure of TR possibly in the early or the mid 1590s, turns its attention from the warning against rebellion to partnership between the sovereign and her subjects.
