Muhammad Husain Azad, one of the important fiqures of Urdu literature, was born and educated in Delhi. His father, Muhammad Baqir, was a famous pioneer of Urdu journalism. Like other in people in Dilhi, Azad suffered seriously from the "Indian Mutiny" in 1857. His father was arrested and sentenced to death, probably on the charge of treason. Azad fled from the destroyed capital and finally settled in Lahore after several years' flight. In Lahore, Azad entered the service of the Education Department, Paniab and then, became a member of the Anjuman-e Panjab, in which he made speeches proposing changes in social, economic and other crucial problems of the Panjab. His speeches were applauded by audiences and British officials, and he began to be considered as a leading social reformist and preacher of the Enlightenment in the Panjab. Azad's new vision on Urdu poetry was formed in the late 1860s and fully manifested on 19 April, 1874 when he made the famous speech advocating a new kind of Urdu poetry. In this sppeech, Azad declared that the age of Persian had been replaced by the age of English, and he eagerly eimphasized the necessity of studying English literature to renew Urdu poetry. But it would be misleading to say that Azad was a simple-minded Anglicist. This is the second chapter of our study on the new movement in Urdu poetry led by Azad. The contents are as follows : Chapter 2 Muhammad Husain Azad (1) Life and works of Azad (2) Azad and the Anjuman-e Panjab (3) Azad's vision on literature 1) Before 1874 2) Azad's speech of 19 April, 1874
