• This study is an introduction to Goethe's research into nature. First we will consider generally the intentions and significance of his research compared with the methods of modern natural science. Natural science explains phenomena primarily by formulating general laws of nature, whereas Goethe searched for the fundamental workings of nature in every phenomenon, and for him this was the purpose of science. Then we will observe his methods in the article, "Der Versuch als Vermittler von Objekt und Subjekt". Here we find Goethe suggesting two methods for making objective judgements in research into the natural sciences. His methods are: joint research, and systematic experimentation. From our modern perspective, we can see in Goethe's suggestions the framework for a comprehensive approach to the natural sciences.
