The purpose of this study is to ascertain the meaning of heaven in Goethe's Faust. We consider first the idea of heaven in the prologue and then the concept of salvation. Heaven is the formal framework of this drama in both setting and thought, and in the end does indeed save Faust's soul; however, Faust's life (at least in his own mind) is throughly independent of heaven. Faust, in his relationship with Mephistopheles, commits many evil deeds under the illusion of their being good. The idea of heaven in the prologue is the eternal active life, in which all good and evil is held in balance within creation. In addition, heaven's saving grace is derived from eternal love. Faust, however, feels such love serves as a kind of "Zeropoint" around which his life revolves. With heaven as this zeropoint, Faust is able to recognize the evil in his ways, and it is through this mechanism that his soul is purified.
