The purpose of this study is to acertain from Goethe's Faust what our attitudes toward technology should be in this modern age. First we consider the concepts of technology and magic, which are both means of transforming the outside world. But when we use technology only for our own ends and without regard for the outside world, it becomes deviltry. Then, in the story of Homunculus, we examine two subjects of importance: the first is the imperfection of technology; the second is the independent existence of Homunculus, apart from his creator's will. Through this study, it becomes clear that Goethe's view of nature as a world in harmony cannot be overlooked when forming our attitudes toward technology.
