We are now standing at the end of the Twentieth Century, and this year, 1999, marks the 250th anniversary of Goethe's birth. This study aims to consider a basic problem of our modern technological age presented in Goehte's Faust. Faust made a bond with the devil which was born of his own strong desire. The bond became a problem for Faust when it moved from the world of knowledge into the world of action. In our age, we may not have an actual secret contact with the devil, yet we may be destroying ourselves and our world. Inspite of his bond with Mephistopheles, we find in "Prolog im Himmel," Faust's cosmic world of beauty and harmony. For the coming Twenty-first Century, we have to now deeply reflect so as not to destroy beauty and harmony of the world with ideas that move us by into selfishness and despair.
