• The purpose of this paper is to reconsider the concept of "society", which has not been closely examined or precisely defined before. With metabolism in mind-human metabolism and social metabolism-as the fundamental point of view, an attempt has been made to clarify the concept of "society". The conclusion is that "society" can be defined as the "ties and relations of humanity in all their entirety which have been formed on the basis of production, commerce and consumption". Society is characterized by its remarkably dynamic nature. We designate, therefore, such characterization as the "radical dynamics of 'society' through history".
