Deformation behaviour of three different crystallographic planes for sapphire single-crystals were investigated by using ultra-micro indentation technique with ball and Berkovich type indenters. The load-displacement curves have been measured at the maximum indentation force of up to 500mN. Ball indentation indicated hysteresis loops with sudden "pop-in' of the penetration on loading curves, while complete elastic deformation was also observed on the same plane. These results may suggest that the onset of the plastic deformation is strongly related to surface orientation and intrinsic defect structures of the crystals.
