The transmission properties of gas phase samples heavily contaminated with aerosols, particles, and water vapor generated by combustible materials as well as the feasibility of pollution detection were obtained by terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in the 0.2 to 3 THz frequency region. The absorption properties of solid-state samples and their correlation with the intensity of real-time THz images were measured using a THz camera in the region of $\lambda\geq 30$ μm. Molecules with weaker dipole moments, such as carbon monoxide, which was detected at higher concentrations in the combustion gas by gas chromatography analysis, did not exhibit sufficient absorption owing to the resolution of THz-TDS. However, no attenuation of transmittance was observed, and we confirmed that THz spectroscopy enables direct and simultaneous measurements of gas phase samples containing contaminants without prefiltration to remove particles in contrast to infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Finally, we confirmed that the absorption properties of solid-state samples correspond to the intensities of real-time THz images.
