A liquid crystal (LC) device with double circularly hole-patterned electrodes and an external flat electrode is developed to improve the range of negative lens power. The negative lens power can be improved by applying the voltage to the additional new hole-patterned electrode. The lens power of the LC device with the double circularly hole-patterned electrodes is about threefold as large as that of the conventional LC device with a single hole-patterned electrode.
