We propose a high speed, high efficiency liquid crystal (LC) etalon modulator for portable projection display applications. High efficiency transmittance is achieved with an etalon device consisting of an electro-optical LC cavity and a pair of dielectric mirrors. Inherently thin, the sub-micron thickness of the LC cavity makes possible high speed switching. Numerical modeling predicts near lossless transmittance and moderate contrast ratio for monochromatic light sources. Designs for a polarization independent device that can operate with broadband light sources such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) are also discussed.
