Diffraction grating based solutions are presented for use in high-efficiency light incoupling into light guides. The replication of slanted gratings into high-refractive-index material is shown to be an excellent method for mass production of high-efficiency incouplers. Phase plates based on high-refractive-index materials are verified to provide 99% conversion efficiency from transverse electric (TE) to transverse magnetic (TM) polarization. Applications for these devices are found in mobile display solutions.
