The Raman spectra of (001) [Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3]0.58–[PbTiO3]0.42 (0.58PSN–0.42PT) single crystal indicates the existence of local structural distortion different from that of the cubic structure. Comparison of Raman spectra with Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PSN) and other relaxor compounds shows a two-mode behavior for 0.58PSN–0.42PT. The two-mode behavior has been clearly identified not only from the high frequency range but also on the basis of the low frequency range of the Raman spectra. This suggests a phase separation of Ti- and Nb-rich regions at the nanometer scale.
