The work function of a modified W(100) surface with zirconium oxide on a planar sample was estimated to be 2.7 eV with the Fowler plot from the local brightness of the obtained photoelectron image by photoemission electron microscopy. This value fairly coincided with the widely accepted values of 2.6–2.9 eV, which were determined with the Fowler–Nordheim plot for field emission. In the thermal field emission cathode used as the transition metal, the work function of the (100) surface was selectively reduced using the electric dipole moment of the transition metal and oxygen. The optimum heat treatment temperature for the formation of this Zr–O complex could be determined from the transition of the work function and the observation of the surface condition at each heat treatment temperature.
