A fluorescent thin film was fabricated by the electrochemical polymerization of pyrene triazine thiol (PMN) molecules on type 304 stainless steel. The features of the film were characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The thin film was formed not of a fiber network but of nanoparticles approximately 30 nm in diameter after 90 min of polymerization. The film thickness increased rapidly to 25 nm after 3 min and then gradually increased to 31–37 nm after 90 min. A rough substrate surface resulted in a rough and thick PMN film. The most stable structure was simulated by molecular mechanics (MM2) calculations, and the tetramer of a PMN derivative had an easily formed particle-like structure. The fluorescence intensity of the PMN film can be used to rapidly measure oxygen content with some film degradation.
