Tapping-mode atomic force microscopy has been used to investigate the morphology of mixed membranes composed of 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-phosphatidylcholine and an artificial cyclic lipid with 24-carbon alkyl chains. Images of this supported membrane, deposited on mica by the vesicle fusion method, show a heterogeneous structure. The driving forces for the phase separation derived from the cyclic lipid are discussed here.
