The alignment of a magnetically isotropic rod like particle under an inhomogeneous magnetic field has been studied. A short glass fiber was aligned under a linearly patterned minimum of a magnetic field that was generated by a field modulator inserted into a homogeneous magnetic field (0.4 or 1 T). The fiber was aligned in the direction of the linearly patterned minimum, in which the magnetic energy of the fiber was minimized. The experimental result for the alignment dynamics was in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.
