Fabrication of Ba2TiGe2O8 Thin Film with Optical Nonlinearity

We have successfully fabricated a glass thin film in the BaO–TiO2–GeO2 system and a fresnoite-type Ba2TiGe2O8 (BTG) crystalline thin film with second-order optical nonlinearity for the first time. An as-deposited glass thin film showing good transparency and homogeneity could be formed on a fused silica substrate by RF sputtering with a 30BaO–15TiO2–55GeO2 glass target. Subsequently, a transparent BTG-crystallized thin film could be obtained using proper heat-treatment conditions. Furthermore, a clear second-harmonic generation has been observed by the Maker fringe technique in the transparent BTG-crystallized thin films obtained by heat treatment at 730–750 °C for 3 h.
