A new technique called cross-beam-type laser-induced evanescent-mode fluorescence has been developed to observe the 1s5 metastable excited atoms of Ar on a dielectric surface in a barrier discharge. A sub-Doppler spectrum with asymmetry to the center frequency of a resonance line is obtained. This asymmetrical signal reflects the dynamic behaviors of the metastable atoms on the dielectric surface and the reflectance of metastables at the surface is estimated to be about 0.3.
