A novel 10 Gb/s Fabry–Perot (FP) laser was proposed and demonstrated. Two symmetric high refractive-index layers were inserted to enhance the optical confinement effect and to improve the high frequency performance. The far-field emitting angles were measured to be 32 and 40°, and confirmed the tight optical confinement behavior. The threshold current of this laser was 10 mA and the slope efficiency was 0.4 W/A under room-temperature operation. The maximum modulation bandwidth of 13.52 GHz and a clear 10 Gb/s transmission eye diagram were demonstrated.
