Epitaxial ferroelectric Sr0.6Ba0.4Nb2O6 (SBN) films were successfully fabricated on MgO and (La0.5Sr0.5)CoO3/MgO (LSCO/MgO) substrates using an innovative technique that combines pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and sol-gel processing method. The PLD grown thin SBN films form self-templates for subsequent deposition of sol-gel derived SBN layers. The structural and morphological properties of these dual-process prepared films were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. They show much improved epitaxy and denser grains than the purely sol-gel derived SBN films without self-template. These marked improvements can be explained by the self-template induced homoepitaxial growth. The electrical measurements confirm the SBN films on LSCO/MgO possess ferroelectric properties with smaller remnant polarization at room temperature.
