The compensatory mechanism of twisted nematic liquid crystals (TN-LCDs) with compensation films composed of discotic compounds and triacetylcellulose (TAC) substrate has been investigated. The optical characteristics of the entire compensation film which has a hybrid aligned discotic compound layer on a TAC substrate were identified as uniaxial negative birefringence whose optical axis was inclined from the normal direction. We determined that the viewing characteristics of TN-LCDs were governed by the optical parameters not of the discotic layer but of a combination of the discotic layer and the TAC substrate as a whole.
