Diffusion Size Effect in the Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillation of Antimony

Transverse magnetoresistance of pure antimony was measured at 1.2 Kin magnetic fields up to 9 T in order to investigate the sample sizedependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect as well as thenonoscillatory magnetoresistance. It was found that the nonoscillatory partof the magnetoresistance ρxx decreased in magnitude with decreasing samplesize. Also, a marked sample size dependence of the SdH oscillation amplitudewas observed. The electron-hole recombination time τeh was obtained by twodifferent ways, that is, it was calculated from the result of the sample sizedependence of the nonoscillatory part ρxx and from that of the SdHoscillation amplitude. The obtained values of τeh were3.3×10-10 s fromnonoscillatory part of ρxx, and 2.5×10-10 s from the SdH oscillationamplitude. Those values were in good agreement with each other and weretwo orders of magnitude smaller than that of bismuth, 1.5×10-8 s.
