The internal bremsstrahlung (IB) spectra accompanying electron capture in 55Fe, has been investigated with particular emphasis on the low energy region using a NaI (Tl) scintillation spectrometer. Corrections for background and absorption are carried out. A set of corrections such as crystal detection efficiency, resolution, geometrical factor, the ratio of photoelectric to total cross-section, photon backscattering and iodine X-ray escape are made by constructing a response matrix (46 energy bins and 140 channels) of the detector assembly for the experimental condition used. Using this matrix, the true IB energy spectrum is obtained by iterative unfolding the pulse-height distribution for comparison with the theoretical spectra. In addition, the response matrix is used directly to fold the theoretical probabilities for comparison with the experimental pulse-height distribution. It is found that the intensity of the extremely low energy photons is much greater than that estimated from Morrison and Shiff's theory. Agreement is best between the experimental observation and the theory of Martin and Glauber, where the p-electron capture and the Coulomb effect are taken into consideration.
