Practical problems concerning modal vibration control of large ultrasonic plastic welding tools using' wave-trapped horns' have been solved. First, to judge the instability of the vibration modes of interest in relation to changes in the horn lengths, the authors propose the instability coefficient' as a practical criterion. Secondly, it has been found that the undesirable influence of the large connecting screws necessary for high amplitude operation can be avoided by means of an appropriate choice of vibrating system configuration giving low values of the coefficient. Lastly, temperature stability of the modes is examined through computer simulations and theoretical consideration. The feasibility of the method is completely vindicated.
