Intense ultraviolet emission at 381 nm and visible emissions at 417, 440, 493, and 548 nm were observed in Tb3+- and Yb3+-codoped phosphate glasses with an excitation of a 974 nm laser diode. The emission mechanism is discussed. The results indicate that Tb3+- and Yb3+-codoped phosphate glasses could be a candidate material for ultraviolet solid state laser and fiber laser.
