We have developed a continuous-wave diode-pumped Yb:YAG laser with high beam quality applying only a highly doped Yb:YAG crystal that is pumped directly into the upper lasing level. The laser produces a practically diffraction-limited Gaussian beam, whose $M^{2}$ factor is 1.36.
