Highly efficient and chromatically stable white organic electroluminescence (EL) devices based on blue-emitting anthracene derivatives doped with yellow-orange-emitting 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene (rubrene) are described. The relative intensities of the blue and orange-yellow emissions could be fine tuned by varying the doping concentration of the rubrene in the host to achieve pure white emission in a simple single-emissive-layer device structure. A double-doped device with 9,10-di-(2-naphthyl)-anthracene (D2NA): 2.5% 9,10-di-(2-naphthyl)-2-terbutyl-anthracene (D2NBA): 0.025% rubrene as the emissive layer shows a maximum brightness of 20,100 cd/m2, a peak external quantum efficiency of 2.4% (5.6 cd/A) at 9 V with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.32, 0.34) independent of the luminance output.
