Calcium Flux During Growth in Sham-operated and Ovariectomized Rats

The details of calcium flux during growth were examined in female rats. Forty-two 53-day-old rats were divided into 2 groups and underwent either bilateral laparotomy (n=21) or bilateral ovariectomy (n=21) at age 60 days. Rats were equally divided into 6 sub-groups during the experimental period. Rats were given a purified diet (0.5% Ca and 0.35% Pi) throughout the experiment. Calcium balance and 45Ca kinetics studies using an open twocompartment model were performed over a 3-day period when rats were 74, 88 and 116 days old. A simple calcium balance study, using the last group, was carried out at age 102 days. The results showed that age affected calcium intake, apparent intestinal calcium absorption, urinary calcium output, calcium excretion into the intestine and the calcium balance in both groups. The peak values of calcium from bone (Vo−) and calcium into bone (Vo+) were found at 88 days in sham-operated (SH) rats. Differences between the two groups with respect to Vo− and Vo+ were observed at 74 days; the values at 74 days in ovariectomized rats were higher than those in SH rats. Taken together, our results suggest that ovariectomy might induce high bone-turnover, which occurs earlier and is greater than that in SH rats, and thereafter the value is similar to that in SH rats.
