A new clean diesel combustion concept has been proposed, which achieves very low NOx emission level less than a half of Euro6 standards without DeNOx catalysts. The combustion concept features promoted fuel-air mixture with a highly dispersed sprays and drastically restricted in-cylinder flows with near-zero swirl ports and with lip-less shallow dish piston cavity. The concept realizes a high thermal efficiency caused by considerably lowered heat-loss, while offering very low NOx and soot emissions. In the first report, the basic ideas of the concept are introduced and such emissions reduction and improved fuel economy were demonstrated using a single cylinder diesel engine.
