New Approach for Piston Assembly Friction Analysis Based on Empirical Data

The main objective of this research was to clarify the influence of skirt and rings on piston assembly friction. We broke down piston assembly friction into piston skirt and ring friction by identifying each Stribeck curves. The result showed piston skirt was in fluid-lubricated and rings were in mixed-lubricated conditions. And piston skirt friction was dominant, especially in high-speed, low-load conditions.
