A gasoline direct injection(DI) engine with the variable valve actuator has the petential for a reduction of fuel consumption because of the higher compression ratio and the lower pumping loss. In this paper, in order to clarify the phenomena under the low valve lift operation in DI engines, in-cylinder gas flow and the mixing process of fuel and air are analyzed in conjunction with 3-D fluid numerical simulation and optical methods; PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) and LIEF(Laser Induced Exciplex Fluorescence), in a transparent engine. As a result, it is clarified that the low valve lift operation affects the in-cylinder gas flow behavior(especially tumble flow) and A/F distribution in the cylinder.
