The writer has been culturing some foreign mung beans since 1955, observing their ecological and morphological characteristics, and discoverd two varieties (Black matpe No. l and Mung bean No. 1, both are native to Burma and are prosperous in the Japanese climate) and one mutant (Asagao type) . By 1962 the former had gone through eight generations and the latter. five generations with with scarcely any variation in their character. Asagao type came of the fourth generation of Chokako (Kalgan) No. 1,
Their morphological and ecological characteristics have been observed as follows :
1. Burmese Mung bean No. l germinates earlier than Black matpe No. 1. The Hypocotyl of Black matpe No, l and Chokako No. l is either white or green. 2. Asagao type has a trifid leaflet. Other varieties have not this kind of leaflet. 3. The cross section of their stalk is almost circular or oval. 4. The Japanse varieties have upright and fewer branehes and matures early. Burmese Mung bean No. l have luxuriant branches and ripens a little later than the Japanese varieties, Chokako No. l and Asagao type the latter belong to the vine type, Chokako No. 1 ripens late. Black matpe No. l has characteristics intermediate between the two types. Asagao type has long branches. 5. Burmese Mung bean No. 1, Asagao type, Chokako No. 1, and Black matpe No. l bloom for a long time one after another and have many flowers and pods 6. The pods of Black matpe No. l are short and thick, while those of the others are long and thin. The color of the pods of Black matpe No. 1, Chokako No. 1, and Asagao type is dark brown and the others have green pods. 7. Black matpe No. 1 has black seeds. Chokako No. l and Asagao type have both bright and light green seeds. Burmse Mung bean No. l and Japanese varieties have lustreless, dark green seeds. 8. Burmese Mulng bean No. 1, Black matpe No. 1 and Asagao type yield more seeds than Japanese varieties.
