Differences in the flowering period, fruit maturity period and fruit qualities were analyzed among mango cultivars which had been introduced into Japan to select suitable cultivars for commercial fruit production in a greenhouse.
Flowering period, fruit harvesting period and fruit qualities of seventeen cultivars of mango trees were observed. The trees which were three years old after grafting were grown in a greenhouse where the minimum temperature in the winter season was higher than 5°C.
The flowering period differed among the cultivars, extending from the end of February through to the middle of May. The harvesting period extended from the middle of August through the middle of October. Four early maturing, ten middle maturing, and three late maturing cultivars were observed among the studied cultivars. Although 'Irwin' belonged to the early maturing cultivars, much earlier cultivars such as 'Florigon' and 'Son Sien' were identified. Red color of peel was the most distinctive character in 'Irwin'. Total soluble solid (TSS) content of sixteen cultivars was higher than that of 'Irwin', and above 18.0% in six cultivars. The beginning of flowering was earliest in 'Khieo Sawoei' and 'Nam Doc Mai' that were introduced from Thailand, and the last part of flowering was latest in these cultivars. Therefore, flower-bud differentiation of these cultivars was considered to persist during a much longer period of time.
