Large-Flowered Chrysanthemums of Summer-to-Autumn-Flowering Type: Cut Flower Cultivation under Open Field Conditions in Kenya: Part II. Effect of Long-day and Shading on Growth and Flowering Using Ethephon Applications and Cold Treatment of Mother Plants

For the elongation of stem in summer-to-autumn-flowering chrysanthemums (<I>Dendranthema grandiflorum</I> (Ramat.) Kitamura) using ethephon sprays, the effect of cold storage of mother plants and light intensity control in tropical and highland regions, were studied in Kenya and in Japan during the summer. Number of days from planting to flowering, leaf number and stem length of 'Seiun' and 'Summer-yellow' chrysanthemums, under long-day conditions were not significantly different from those under dark conditions when mother stocks were cultivated in a 5°C incubator. Number of days from planting to flowering and leaf number of both cultivars in Kenya slightly little increased after thirty days of cold storage of mother plants, ethephon sprays and shading with a cheesecloth (51 % shade) . Stem length of 'Summer-yellow' chrysanthemums was 83.4 cm and that of 'Seiun' chrysanthemums in Kenya was 80.6 cm after cold storage of mother plants for thirty days, ethephon sprays and shading with cheesecloth (51 % shade) . In both cultivars during summer in Japan, when ethephon sprays and shading with single or double layers of cheesecloth were used, the stem was longer than that without shading. Comparison of shading with single and double layers of cheesecloth and ethephon sprays showed that the stem of 'Seiun' was longer when the plants were cultivated under a double layer of cheesecloth. However, the stems of 'Summer-yellow' and 'Super-yellow' were longer when a single layer was used. Under high-temperature and short-day conditions, when cold storage of mother plants, ethephon sprays and shading with a cheesecloth were used, the stem length of the cut flowers of summer-to-autumn-flowering chrysanthemums was suitable for the cut flower market in Japan.
