Four different irrigation schedules, such as unirrigated control and irrigation at 20, 40, and 60% depletion of available soil moisture (DASM) were tested on the potato (<I>Solanum tuberosum</I>L.) cultivar, Cardinal in presence and absence of 15 cm thick rice straw mulch in a Plinthic Paleustult of Bangladesh. The findings reflected that permissible limit of available soil moisture (ASM) depletion to irrigate potato field might be within 20-40% to achieve a high yield target under the edaphic and climatic settings of the experimental area. Maintenance of the aforesaid limit of ASM required 6-7 irrigations in absence of mulch and 4-5 irrigations in presence of mulch suggesting that conservation of soil moisture in the mulched plots could save 2 irrigations during the whole growing period. Moreover, mulching was found to offer an added tuber yield of 4 t/ha when the average effects of different irrigation schedules were considered to compare the tuber yields of mulched and unmulched plots. The total water use of a high yielding potato crop in the experimental area was estimated to be within the range of 200-216 mm which could be reduced to 137-146 mm through minimizing soil water evaporation by the use of 15 cm thick rice straw mulch. More frequent irrigation allowing less depletion of ASM ensured better efficiency of water use by potato which was further improved substantially in presence of mulch-cover. More frequent irrigations in presence of mulch-cover minimized the proportion of smaller sized tubers and maximized the proportion of larger ones thus ensured improved tuber size distribution and higher tuber yield as well.
