Effect of Salinity Treatment on the Chemical Composition of Plants and Seeds in Salicornia herbacea L.

<I>Salicornia herbacea</I> plants were irrigated with saline water at various concentrations during the growing season to analyze the chemical composition and nutrient absorption of the shoots. After about 2 months of cultivation in saline solutions (3% and 8% NaCl), the mineral content of <I>S. herbacea</I> shoots exceeded 50% (dry weight basis), but it was possible for the plants to survive in an 8% NaCl solution. The crude protein concentration of the shoots of <I>S. herbacea</I> was higher, and the crude fiber content was lower than those of orchardgrass crops. The concentration of crude oil in seeds was higher than that in seeds of soybean. The chemical composition and nutrient absorption of the seeds which were harvested after the plants were irrigated with saline water at various concentrations, were analyzed. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the crude oil percentage in seeds between the controls and the treatment with 3% NaCl. Based on these results, it is suggested that <I>S. herbacea</I> could be used as forage or oil crop in areas where it is difficult to cultivate these crops due to the detrimental effect of salt.
