Salicornia herbacea is a highly salt-tolerant halophyte. It was demonstrated that the anatomical structure of the shoots was closely related to the salt tolerance of S. herbacea. In experiment 1, S. herbacea was cultured in a solution containing salt and a dye, Patent Blue. NaCl was translocated to the parenchyma cells through two vessels in the vascular bundle of the shoot node. NaCl was stored from outside parenchyma cells to inside cells in stems. As the vessels in the shoot node did not pass through nodal segments, nodal segments were independent in the storage of NaCl. In experiment 2, S. herbacea was cultured in 5% NaCl solution, and in experiment 3, in 3% NaCl solution with Patent Blue dye. Leakage of the solution on the surface of the shoot was observed. Then crystallization of NaCl was observed in the dye on the surface of the shoots of S. herbacea, suggesting that S. herbacea plants excrete NaCl solution onto the surface of the shoots.
